This is a unique firsthand account by an officer, Abner Doubleday, who was a witness and participant to the events and actions leading up to that momentous act that brought in our horrific civil war. General Doubleday, as he later became, is also a very good writer and one who held a difficult and potentially dangerous ideology for the time since he was an out spoken voice for the abolishing of slavery. He writes with an excellent command of the subject and gives the reader a feeling of being an eyewitness to the events that he so effectively describes. It was as though he took me inside the walls of Forts Moultrie and Sumter while maintaining his post as an officer of a small unit of United States artillery surrounded by the very hostile people of South Carolina. Definitely a very good, very informative first hand account of the time and these momentous events. Thank you General Doubleday for leaving this excellent account.Product details

This book gives great insight into the early days of the conflict as well as the delicate balance that was playing out in Anderson’s mind through the battle
Very good account by a person that was there for the Union side. Good lead up with background information. Well worth reading about South Carolina and the events and feelings leading up to the attack and surrender.
This book was well written in a diary format and is an easy read. The insight into the daily life inside Fort Sumter and feelings of the people in Charleston during the days prior to the start of the Civil War was information that you do not find in school history books. The author, a union officer who was there, did a good job of trying to be objective in his writing. I would definitely recommend this book.
A first hand recollection of the beginnings of the civil war in the United States separated by seditionists actions to bring down the Union. Southern actions to bring the Country into the most horrible epic of our history, that was settled by allowing these seditionists to continue their racist activities into another one hundred fifty plus years of horror for this country.
History fanatic here. I am getting ready to take a family trip to South Carolina. On this trip I get to see fort Sumter. So naturally I have been reading up. It's easy to enjoy history when your truly fascinated with it. Most people are not so eager, but I would highly recommend this account. Doubleday was a character. There is a lot of flair in his writing. It's comprehensive and short.

Abner Doubleday provided a first hand account of the battle at Fort Sumter during the start of the American Civil War. It's a fascinating account of how the shooting started, as well as the lead up. Doubleday does a good job of showing the obvious difficulty that Anderson had in reconciling his feelings with his duty.
Definitely pick up if interested in the American Civil War.
Nothing to do with baseball, but provides essential understanding of the perhaps avoidable onset of the Civil War, by the second-in-command of the Union garrison at Fort Sumter. Furthermore it is brilliantly written, worthy of comparison with Winston Churchill in the military history field, but far more concise, probably about 100 pages worth.
